iQ Students Complete More than 9899 Service Learning Hours!

Release Date: February 8, 2007

All full time iQ Academy students have to complete 1 credit of Service Learning prior to graduating from iQ Academy. The purpose of this service learning requirement is to give iQ Academy students exposure with experience giving back to their local community. Students can select whatever volunteer work they wish, but only a percentage of it can be directly for their own family. This school year, iQ Academy students have completed more than 9899 service learning hours!

A few of the many community-based service learning projects include:

  • Classroom and tutoring assistance for younger students
  • Elder care including housework, general home repairs, and health care assistance
  • Food service, Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels assistance
  • Katrina hurricane relief
  • Animal care and Humane Society volunteering
  • Church and missionary work

How Service Learning at iQ Academy Works:

  • The course is mostly taken by Juniors and Seniors.
  • One credit is equal to 180 hours of volunteering.
  • Students maintain a log of their hours worked, and the time must be verified and signed off by an adult supervising the activity.
  • Students submit their log at the end of each semester as well as a reflection paper in which they describe how this course impacted them and telling what they learned from the experiences.
